Activities
The aims of ICA/SMA

- to promote closer collaboration among municipal archives and institutions taking care of municipal archives all over the world.
- to gather and disseminate information about the activities of municipal archives
- to carry out projects of professional interest.
- to represent the views and interests of municipal archives within the International Council on Archives. In fact we want to meet each other on a regular basis.
- to exchange experiences in management at the municipal level; to introduce forms of networking and mutual assistance.
- to publish articles in these fields in ICA's professional review COMMA and to edit regularly a Directory of the archives members of ICA/SMA.
- to introduce subjects of municipal interest in international conferences, such as the Round Table on Archives and quadrennial International Congress on Archives.
MEDIUM-TERM PLAN 2001-2004
1. Communication
- 1.1. Recruitment campaign to the Section.
Each member of the committee has undertaken to carry Out a recruitment campaign within a geographical sector chosen by itself.
- 1.2. A new edition of the Section’s presentation leaflet has been produced to this purpose, in English, French, German and Spanish.
- 1.3. A questionnaire was designed in Beijing with a view to publishing a yearbook of the Section, which will be sent to members during the year. During the years since Beijing the situation has improved a lot due to the development of electronic media; our Website will be a much better way of informing all our Members.
2. Activities
- 2.1. Programming of the annual meetings of the Steering
Committee: Rio de Janeiro (June 2002), Valladolid (March 2003) and Vienna (August 2004).
- 2.2. The relations between the committee and the members of the Section: a mailing will be sent once or twice a year. For further information, see the Newsletter below.
3. Publications
- 3.1. Creation of a six-monthly newsletter, in English and French, directed by Jan Boomgaard from Amsterdam.
- 3.2. Creation of the Section’s own website with a link to the ICA site, which will also be the responsibility of J. Boomgaard, since it could largely include the Newsletter in electronic form.
- 3.3. The minutes of the symposia (Seville and Rio) could be published in summarised form in the Newsletter, and, exceptionally, certain texts in COMMA.
4. Varlous projects
- 4.1 . The committee will continue to monitor the development programme of municipal archives in South America. An ad hoc commission will be created, with Daise Apparecida Oliveira as its chairperson. It also supports the DACE project of the European capitals and the projects of the cities of the Raphael network.
- 4.2. A student will be commissioned, under the direction of R. Alberch Fugueras, to establish an international bibliography on municipal archives.
- 4.3. The committee will make every effort to attend the events on municipal archives organised around the world (Valladolid in 2003).
