ICA/SMA is the Section of Municipal Archives of the International Council on Archives in accordance with Article 34 of its Constitution. The International Council on Archives is the only worldwide non-governmental organisation which represents the interests of archives and archivists. On the recommendation of the Executive Committee of the International Council on Archives, ICA/SMA was established in Luxemburg 1985, and formally recognised by the International Council on Archives General Assembly in Paris 1988.

News

Members of the Steering Committee met in Barcelona on November 26-27 to train on the content management of this website. They spoke also about the SMA program for the period 2004 - 2008 and about the Budapest meeting which will be held from June 2-5, 2005.

Projects

The fortification of the democratic process in Latin America created many initiatives aiming the improvement of pubic policy with better services offered to the population. The Municipal Archives in Latin – America try to provide the information demand but occupy an inferior hierarchic position, without infrastructure, human and material resources. Daise Apparecida Oliveira, member of the steering committee of ICA/SMA and president of Forum of Municipal Archives Directors in Latin-America worked very hard on the project Cooperation of Municipal Archives of Iberian-America.
The aims of the project were twofold :

• Developing strategies for the Public Management Improvement
• Implantation of the Systemic Municipal Management and Information – GSDIM

Members

Municipal archives can be a member of ICA/SMA for the annual fee of 130 US$. Membership with ICA/SMA is establishing new forms of networking and mutual assistance amongst institutions and colleagues all over the world. Especially with regard to the permanently increasing use of electronic data-processing in the framework of the administration, the democratic right of access to information, the preservation of archival records as part of the cultural heritage and – last but not least – all the different aspects of public relations it is of utmost importance to be well acquainted with the modern and actual trends of the profession of the municipal archivist. Municipal archives are the most wide-spread type of Archives world wide so take the chance of taking part in an ongoing process of discussions.
